Welcome friends for tea this week. Last week when we gathered I did a little survey on whether fellow bloggers use butter or shortening in their scones.
Although a few said they only use heavy cream, more said they use butter than shortening.

Have you tried one of these French butter bells?
The top packed with butter sits upside down in 1/3 cup cold water which you change every couple of days. (the water just meets the rim and creates a seal) No need for refrigeration and it stays a nice consistency even in hot weather.
I wanted to share the blog where I found the recipe for homemade butter but I cannot find it again. Simply Google homemade better made in a food processor and several good sites come up.
I've been away so I don't have a teacup or table to share but I did photograph a couple of interesting hanging planters.
While away I had a mocha cinnamon creme brulee for dessert one evening with a pot of Earl Grey. It was sheer bliss!
Thank you to my hosts; I hope you'll visit their blog and guests.

I had never heard about the butter keeper ...looks like a good thing!
I found a butter boat which will hold an entire stick of butter - same principle.
What a good idea the butter keeper would be! Home made butter sounds so good. I remember my grandmother used to churn it and was it ever good on her home made bread and rolls fresh out of the oven. It was heavenly!
I really like the hanging tea kettle and your dessert looks delish! So glad you could join me for tea today. Have a lovely week, Judith.
Blessings,
Sandi
Judith, I will be closing Bella Vista this coming Sunday but wanted to thank you for being such a kind friend.
I really feel a connection with you.....it has been lovely.
Be blessed!

Nor have ever heard of a butter keeper. Very interesting. When I was first married, we lived on my father in law's dairy farm where I frequently made butter. I have my husband's grandmother's wooden butter bowl and paddle and a butter churn. But I like the food processor idea better.
Never heard of or seen butter like that before. Interesting though. Like the teapot planter.

That butter conatiner sounds really interesting. I would love to have one....Christine
I have seen the butter crocks and saw that they keep butter cool even in hot weather. Glad to hear they work!
Hi Judith: I never thought to use a coffee kettle as a hanging planter--what a great idea. And that creme brulee looks wonderful! I use butter when I make scones. Take care, and enjoy your week.
I love the tea kettle planters, I've got a few planted up too, but need to hang one like in your photo. Yummy dessert and tea.
I've heard about the butter keepers but wasn't sure if they would really work. Now when I see one I will buy it. Hubby prefers real butter and it will be perfect for us! Thanks for sharing this and have a wonderful week.

Hi Judith, I like the tea kettle with the plant hanging in the tree. Looks cute! Your dessert and Earl Grey does indeed sound fabulous. I have never heard of a butter bell. Interesting!
Hugs and blessings, Beth
Yes, I love my butter bell. Love having soft, fresh butter. There are times when I wish that it held more than a stick...company times, holiday times. Oh the creme brulee sounds so delightful. I've never had a flavored version.
We have a butter crock like yours, and yes, it DOES work, even here in hot humid Florida. Of course, we do have AC,but even so, it really does work and keeps the butter at just the right consistency to spread. Since we started using this butter crock, we are using butter all the time. I have stopped buying margarine altogether. Butter just tastes so much better, and I am learning that it really isn't bad for you afterall!
Thank you for sharing this tonight!
I have one of those butter bells or keepers I got at a charity shop, It is oval in shape and flat on the bottom and holds water. I love it. I tend to keep butter out anyway but the water below keeps it firmer. I didn't know much about it, just figured out what it was. Should do a post on it!
Love the kettle as a plant container, I use to help my auntie as a child to make butter, she had a butter crock as well. Memories...thank you
Hi Judith!
I love your teapot planter and The butter concept sounds interesting. I am going to check it out. Have a nice day.

Hi Judith,
that butter bell looks very simply and efficient. Lovely way to keep butter fresh but not too hard. I have made several times butter by accident. When I make whipped cream and the cream is not cold enough, it will become butter after a while. This butter tastes nice, too. Your mocha cinnemon vreme brulee looks wonderful.
Best greetings, Johanna
HI Judith,
I do agree that butter is best for shortbread. Best and most fattening, unfortunately. :)
We've used butter crocks and they work well. Especially here where it is generally not too hot!
Wishing you a great week.

I have not tried one of the butter bells but I've always been very curious about them. And your mocha cinnamon creme brulee sounds divine!
Hi Judith! So glad to have you visit on one of my rare summer tea posts this year - I really miss regular posting lately, but real world demands tear me away from my Blogland. To that end, I missed your butter or shortening survey and would have cast my vote for neither - I use unsweetened organic applesauce with less calories and the result is lovely! I partake of my scone with less guilt . . . LOL.
Joy!
Kathy
Love those plant hangers - and the butter keeper too!
Absolutely! I love butter bells - they're wonderful inventions. Gorgeous dessert - looks way too yummy! I appreciate you sharing with A Return to Loveliness,
Kathy
